Black Dog Mission 14 - Lifeline Walkthrough

contributed by Trsc

In this mission, you need to attack very quickly in the beginning. Note that as your Recycler arrives so does the initial attack by the enemy. Fend them off and then get to work building base defenses. Power Supplies and Gun Towers + well armed Turrets are the key. I suggest you have at least three GTs equipped with Flash Cannons and 4 Turrets equipped with double SP Stabbers to deal with the attacks that will constantly arrive your base during this mission. This will of course take some time as scrap begins to get scarce.

You will recieve a message about an APC that is heading toward the base. Do not look for it when you first hear the message, wait 'til it becomes highlighted on the screen to go destroy it. Beware, there are Bolt Mines located all over the map and they can severely damage you if you're unfortunate enough to trip over one.

Tip: Monitor your topographical radar (green one) and look for small squares, these generally are the Bolt mines. If you are equipped with twin SP Stabbers in your tank, two accurate hits will destroy them. Use hillsides and cover to destroy them, you have a greater range than they do.

Make your way to the APC and, if you can, destroy the APC and then head for your base. I suggest that you avoid the Tanks that are escorting it as you could suffer damage and the uneccessary loss of allied units. If you can just destroy the APC then run for your base, the GTs will take care of the enemy should they decide to follow.

Throughout the mission there will be many attacks on your base. Make sure equipment is always in a state of good repair and that they have plenty of ammo. You will be leaving the base for extended periods of time later on so preparation is crucial.

Tip: Always kill enemy pilots if they eject from their vehicles when destroyed. Like you, the enemy only has a certain number of pilots. Once depleted they can't build more ships. The enemy Turrets in this mission are equipped with Twin SP Stabbers so be careful when attacking them. Same rules apply when dealing with these turrets as any other Turret, you can strafe around them faster than they can turn.

The base you have to destroy is in the center of the map, two of the paths that lead to this base are defended by Laser Towers that have the Heavy duty SP Stabber installed in them. Four shots from them and you are walking home. There is a third path that will lead to the base on the East side of the map. I suggest that you alone make you way around that side of the map and very slowly (a) Destroy the mines and (b)clear the way for any other units that you will need later on. You could also place a Nav beacon at the entrance to this ravine so that any units that are built from your base can be ordered to go to it without fear of the AI units piling through the middle of a well defended enemy base or Tank killing Laser Towers.

On the East side of the map is the main Silo for the enemy - destroy it and any scavs that head toward it. The secret to taking out the GT is this: Let's say that you are on the East side of the map where the Silo used to be. If you look at your play area map you can see that there is a ravine running north and south. In the middle of this ravine are two Laser Towers. If you drive up to the edge of the ravine and stick the nose of your tank out you should have an unobstructed view of one of the power supplies. Destroy it! Move to the other side of the ravine and do the same to the other one.

Once you have done this it's time to consider taking on the enemy base. I suggest that you build the best armed offensive force that you can and hold them 200 meters from the Base entrance on the East side. You then make a dashing run across the mouth of the base and attempt to draw out the Walkers and other units that are there. When they come around the corner they'll pile straight into your army of tanks and hopefully get destroyed with minimal losses to you. This might take several attempts to get right though. The only negative thing about this is the fact that way up on the hillside are two howitzers that will be raining mortars down on your position. A good pilot can actually get up and destroy them although this is quite difficult to do, and impossible if you have Auto Leveling turned on.

Again the secret to getting into the base is to stick your nose out and fire at what you can see making use of the terrain as cover. Once inside there are well-armed Turrets and Towers to deal with. Keep picking away at them and soon enough you will be counting the scrap that used to be the enemy. A priority has to be the Recycler and Factory in that order.
